About
🌿 About CResMPA Project
The Climate Resilience Multi-Phase Programmatic Approach (CResMPA) is a flagship national development initiative implemented by the Ministry of Irrigation Sri Lanka (under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation), with financial support from the World Bank.
The project is designed to strengthen Sri Lanka’s resilience to climate change by reducing vulnerability to floods, improving water management systems, and enhancing the country’s capacity for climate forecasting and disaster preparedness.
🎯 Project Objectives
CResMPA focuses on:
- Enhancing weather and climate forecasting systems and early warning mechanisms
- Reducing flood risks, especially in vulnerable areas such as the Kelani River Basin
- Improving irrigation infrastructure, including tanks, canals, and dams
- Strengthening water resource management across all districts
- Supporting climate-resilient agriculture and livelihoods
These efforts aim to protect both people and property from increasing climate-related risks.
🌍 Project Scope & Implementation
The CResMPA project is a multi-phase program (2021–2026) implemented across Sri Lanka. It involves collaboration among several government institutions, including the Irrigation Department and related agencies.
Key activities include:
- Rehabilitation of irrigation systems nationwide
- Flood mitigation and drainage improvements
- Data collection and analysis for river basins
- Strengthening institutional capacity for climate adaptation
The project also supports farmers and rural communities by improving water efficiency and reducing the impacts of drought and floods.
💡 Vision
To build a climate-resilient Sri Lanka where sustainable water management systems safeguard communities, support agriculture, and ensure long-term environmental stability.
